Tea in the garden

This blog chronicles my nostalgic baking of old fashioned cakes, and other idle aspects of life here in the wilds of the westcountry. I hope it inspires you to enjoy your own baking.

While the recent trends are for american cupcakes and whoopie pies - and I admire anyone who can make a celebration cake out of royal icing and sugarpaste - what really get me going are the traditional British country cakes of the past, the ones I can remember my mother and grandmothers making for our afternoon tea: orange and poppyseed; dundee; chocolate and almond; madeira or gingerbread; strawberry shortcake; apple cake; rock cakes, crumbles and flapjacks. I enjoy baking these and many more, often using the delicious fruit and sometimes even the herbs that we grow in our cottage garden.
